Research Area 04 · Construction Decision Intelligence Lab

Project Delivery Outcomes and Construction Education

Projects fail for reasons practitioners can name, and the next generation learns from what the curriculum includes. This area studies delivery outcomes and brings AI and sustainability into how construction is taught.

The problem

Projects fail for reasons practitioners can name, and the people they hurt most are rarely the people who chose the method. Meanwhile the next generation of construction managers learns from a curriculum that is only beginning to include AI, sensing, and sustainability, and often learns it abstractly, far from the decisions they will actually face.

The approach

Empirical work on why projects fail and what that failure costs the people around them, and education research on bringing AI and sustainability knowledge into construction programs through real cases and working instruments. The Field Instruments double as teaching modules: students change an input, watch the consequence, and explain why the result changed.

Open Problems

  1. Failure factors on U.S. mission-critical programs, measured rather than inherited from developing-country studies.
  2. Whether instrument-based modules produce measurable learning gains against lecture-based teaching of the same concept.
  3. How to keep a construction curriculum current when the tools change faster than the catalog.
